Synching Microsoft CRM Company Names with Outlook Contacts

In Microsoft CRM 4.0 for Outlook there is a new setting in the CRM Synchronization menu that will update the company field of Outlook contacts that are synched with CRM. To enable this setting, go to the CRM Outlook menu, click options, and go to the synchronization tab.

A couple of things to be aware of:

1. This will only update contacts synched as a result of your local data settings. If you manually track one of your Outlook contacts, and the resulting contact is outside of the contacts specified by your local data settings, the CRM account name will not be synched to Outlook
2. This is a one-way synchronization from CRM to Outlook. Changes made to the company name in Outlook will not affect CRM data. Also, if you have something in the Company field in Outlook, it will be overwritten by the CRM name when you synchronize.
3. If you already have contacts synchronized with CRM before you enable the setting, these contact records will not be updated with the company name when you enable the setting. This information will only be updated when something changes on the contact record in CRM ("isdirty"). When I tested it, I just added a space to the email2 field, and then my synched outlook contact record was updated.
