Automatic Workflow Rule Will Not Run – Event 16640, Error code 80040204
If an automatic workflow rule is not starting and you receive an error in your CRM server Event Viewer (Application Folder) it may be due to the account running the Microsoft CRM Workflow Service not being in the appropriate Active Directory groups.
Problem:
A workflow rule that should fire automatically (an email should be sent on creation of a record for example) does not fire and there is no record of the workflow running (with errors or not) in the Workflow Monitor.
Scenario:
The Microsoft CRM Workflow Service is using a non-default account for starting (NT Authority is the default account) AND that account is not in the PrivUserGroup and SQLAccessGroup (both groups are part of the CRM Organizational Unit in Active Directory that is specified during the CRM installation).
Resolution:
Add the account (the one used on the Microsoft CRM Workflow Service) to the PrivUserGroup and SQLAccessGroup as needed. Restart the Microsoft CRM Workflow Service (skipping this step will cause the error again).
